Need:
I have so much respect for people who fast, in any form, in any manner, whatever fasting means to them.  What I love about fasting is the agreement that we make with ourselves when we fast. We decide what is needed and what not.  We identify the superfluous and shed it.  Some people fast with only water, some fast intermittently, others forego a single desire. Some people fast for dietary reason, or meditative reasons, others for political reasons, but all fasts share a same common base, restriction from a desire to better understand a need.  Is it safe to call food a superfluous desire? Food the stuff that gives us life and energy, I think yes. There are a great many things in this life that give us energy, food is not the only one. When we restrict food we find an expanse of beautiful things in life that infuse us with energy. Fasting helps us appreciate those other sources, it helps us understand what is the positive energy in our lives and what it is the negative. What is additive and what is subtractive, what truly do we need.
